A shepherdess named Afroze Numa from Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan region has achieved something amazing. She’s among the BBC’s 100 inspiring women for 2023. Afroze Numa is one of the last shepherdesses following an old tradition in the Shimshal valley, looking after goats, yaks, and sheep for nearly 30 years. Her work has not only helped her village but also supported kids in getting an education.
The BBC’s list for 2023 has many different women, including Michelle Obama, Amal Clooney, Aitana Bonmatí, Timnit Gebru, Gloria Steinem, America Ferrera, and Huda Kattan. They are known for different things, like fighting for climate change, using technology in new ways, and representing different cultures. Afroze-Numa being on this list shows the world the challenges and victories of women in places we don’t often hear about.
Her story is a powerful example of how women, even when they face many problems, can still inspire and change their communities and the world.
